Overview

For over six decades, Florida has prohibited the practice of naturopathic medicine, severely limiting residents’ access to holistic and natural healthcare options. Both traditional naturopaths and licensed Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) have been restricted from practicing, leaving Floridians without the freedom to choose natural, science-based approaches to health.

House Bill 533 (HB 533) & Senate Bill 470 (SB 470): A Path to Restoring Naturopathic Medicine in Florida

Two key bills—HB 533 in the Florida House and SB 470 in the Florida Senate—aim to reverse these restrictions and allow qualified naturopathic practitioners to serve Floridians once again.

These companion bills will:

• Remove Outdated Restrictions: Legalize the use of the term naturopathy and allow traditional naturopaths to practice freely, just as they do in many other states.
• Reinstate Licensure for Naturopathic Doctors (NDs): Provide a professional licensing framework for NDs who have completed accredited medical training, ensuring high standards of education, safety, and transparency.
• Expand Healthcare Choices: Give Floridians the freedom to choose holistic and natural health options, including evidence-based naturopathic medicine.
• Protect Existing Practitioners: The legislation explicitly states that it does not restrict the work of homeopaths, herbalists, traditional healers, health coaches, or other natural health professionals.
